CAC PROCESS
Understanding the CAC Process
At the Regional Child Advocacy Center, we bring together professionals in a child-friendly setting to ensure that children who have experienced abuse receive the care, support, and protection they deserve — all in one place.
What Happens at the CAC?
When a report of child abuse is made, a child may be referred to the CAC for services. Here’s what to expect:
1. Forensic Interview
Children meet with a specially trained forensic interviewer in a private, child-friendly room.
-
The interviewer asks non-leading, age-appropriate questions
-
The goal is to gather information in a way that is safe, supportive, and trauma-informed
-
The interview is observed by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) behind the scenes, so the child only has to tell their story once
2. Medical Evaluation (if needed)
If appropriate, a medical exam may be scheduled with a trained pediatric professional.
-
Focuses on the child’s health, safety, and well-being
-
Done in a comforting and respectful environment
-
Helps reassure the child and caregiver that they are physically okay
3. VICTIM & Family AdvocacY
Our family advocate meets with the non-offending caregiver(s) to:
-
Provide emotional support and crisis intervention
-
Explain what to expect throughout the investigation
-
Connect families with therapy, legal resources, and community services
4. Mental Health & COUNSELING Referrals
Healing takes time, and we’re here to help children and families get the long-term support they need.
-
We offer referrals to trauma-focused counseling
-
We follow up to ensure families have access to appropriate and affordable services
5. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Collaboration
The CAC works closely with a team of professionals, including:
-
Law enforcement
-
DHR (Department of Human Resources)
-
Prosecutors
-
Medical professionals
-
Mental health professionals
This team approach ensures better communication, coordination, and outcomes for the child and family — all while reducing further trauma.
Our Goal
Our goal is simple:
To provide a safe, supportive space where children can share their experiences, and families can find the help, healing, and hope they need.
You are not alone — and we’re here every step of the way.
